Pattern Wheel Thumb

The Hot CoatTM and Hot CoatTM Plus industrial hot melt rollcoaters are now available with standard patterned wheel to apply dots of hot melt adhesive to flat rigid substrates.

The Hot Coat and Hot Coat Plus DP includes a patterned hot melt wheel with drilled dots on close centers. This adhesive patterning allows for focused, concentrated bonding of hot melt with dots rather than a thin overall layer of hot melt. Using dots to bond substrates or “Zone Coating” has the effect of reducing adhesive consumption, can increase laminated substrate flexibility and is a cleaner application method eliminating messy “Stringing” off the coating wheel.

The Hot Coat Plus DP’s are built on the smallest footprint in the industry for easily operator accessibility. They have the best melt rate of any small hot melt rollcoater with both a heated tank and heated wheel. The variable speed drive and precise temperature controls with micrometer coating blade adjustment insure that the hot melt pattern is perfect with each application.

Delivery for these units with patterned roll is 2 to 8 weeks depending on stock. The smaller 7’s and 11’s are the shortest lead time.Custom drilled patterns will cost approximately 25% more and extend the delivery of the system.

Hot Melt Tips15 Feb 2008 10:20 am

A seasonal packaging company recently called Glue Machinery for a hot melt system to seal the bottom of cases they were currently producing. They needed to erect and glue 60,000 box bottoms in a three month period. This was a daunting task that the company dreaded as this erecting process was expensive, slow, and low quality box bottoms were encountered in their initial process.

Glue Machinery Corporation recommended the Ergo Erector instead of just a hot melt system. The Ergo Erector allowed them to quickly square the boxes, apply the adhesive to the minor flaps, and compress the major flaps. This equipment worked so well that the second hot melt system the customer insisted they needed was not purchased. The customer was also glad to report that they went ahead to retool their plant due to the major efficiency gains realized by using the Glue Machinery Corporation Ergo Erector.

Ergo ErectorErgo Erector Closeup

The Ergo Erectorâ„¢ simlifies box erecting, improves package quality, accelerates the box building process, and reduces adhesive consumption by as much as 50%.

The operator can easily square boxes by sliding them over the mandrel, folding in the minor flaps, applying the hot melt to the minor flaps, compressing the major flaps against the mandrel, and lastly sealing the case bottom permanently. The mandrel system insures that the minor flaps do not deflect away from the major flaps when compressed and that maximum bond is achieved immediately.

The complete Ergo Erectorâ„¢ system includes steel workstation base, adjustable height mandrel, mandrel specific to your box or boxes, high volume hot melt tank, hose and gun, welded steel hot melt tank stand, adjustable boom, hose cradle and tool balancer.

Assembly is very easy typically taking one hour.

Moisture Curing Hot Melt Urethane or Polyurethane Reactive Hot Melt (PUR) is available in 310 ml cartridges to be processed by specially designed hot melt guns with cartridge adapters and nozzles.

If PUR drips, strings, leaks or flows from the nozzle after the gun is deactivated the gluing process can become extremely messy and costly as well as frustrating.

PUR cartridges fit directly into PUR guns where they are heated to a molten state and pressurize in order to flow. With the manual actuation of the pneumatic trigger compressed air is forced into the back of the cartridge. A floating piston separates the compressed air from the molten adhesive in the cartridge. With this pressure applied the molten adhesive flows through the check valve nozzle tip and is extruded onto the substrate. When the pressure is relieved the check valve ball and spring mechanism in the nozzle should quickly stem the flow of adhesive and minimize adhesive “Stringing” or dripping from the nozzle.

We recommend that the following steps are taken to insure that the PUR Cartridge Bead Gun operates properly:

1. Replace nozzle tips regularly
2. Attach threaded nozzle caps filled with high temperature grease to externally threaded nozzles when not in use
3. Replace adapters that attach the nozzle to the cartridge every few weeks
3. Insure that the gun is venting properly when deactivated
4. Do not use dented cartridges
5. Insure that foil seal in cartridge is punctured properly so that foil is not released into the nozzle
6. Preheat all cartridges with the correct preheater for the correct amount of time
9. Insure that the cartridges are thoroughly heated and completely molten before using
10. Raise the temperature of the adhesive where necessary to insure proper machining through the nozzle tip

Please call to discuss the performance of your PUR equipment.

Fast Precise Hot Melt Turf Gluing System

Labor is one of the highest costs facing turf/sports field assembly companies. To minimize the amount of time need to assemble the seams of a sports field the hot melt machinery must be taken into account.

The standard hot melt systems used for on-site turf seam gluing applications are typically small 120 VAC systems with small gear pumps. These systems have insufficient melt rate and pump capacity for most applications and can dramatically increase the field assembly time.

Turf assembly companies require that high volumes of bituminous asphalic black hot melt are quickly applied to four inch tape or seams with coating thicknesses of .005″. This equates to approximately 10 lbs. of hot melt for every 100 feet of gluing.

For this application a 240 VAC 50 lb. hot melt tank (3500 watt, 240 VAC single phase) is needed with 1-2 lb per minute pump, 16′ abrasion resistant hose, High Flow handgun with .055 nozzle tip. Dual orifice nozzles can be added to the gun for single stroke gluing or a 2′ wand can be attached to the gun with a heated holster for the wand mounted on the cart.

For additional gluing convenience the system should be mounted on a wide footprint cart with a boom, hose cradle and tool balancer.

Winery Box Gluing with Hot Melt

Most small to midsized wineries do their own packaging. They erect and glue wine box bottoms, insert the filled bottles of wine and glue the tops of these boxes.

The most time consuming portion of the packaging process is the erecting of the wine box and the sealing of the box bottom. When gluing the bottom both liquid adhesives and hot melt adhesives are used. Typically the box is opened, the minor flaps folded in, the adhesive applied, the major flaps folded over the minor flaps and the box flipped over and compressed from the inside.

This process is very time consuming and tedious especially when using white or water based glue. Because this is so labor intensive it is not considered ergonomically correct package assembly. Fortunately, this problem can be easily addressed.

We recommend wineries purchase or build the correct box erector. This consists in its most basic form of a high volume hot melt system, box mandrel and tool balancer to hold the hot melt handgun. With a properly sized mandrel and box stop on the mandrel post, the box can be squared and the flaps glued in two quick steps. Slide the box over the box mandrel, fold the flaps, apply the hot melt, compress the flaps, pull the box off the mandrel and repeat. The hot melt gun should be properly “tool balanced” for easy use.

This system and will allow operators to easily make quality packaging at a much higher rate with less fatigue. The typical hot melt cost per box bottom is one cent.

Gluing the top of the case with hot melt is much easier and it requires half the adhesive quantity.

The Nordson Mini-Squirt is a quality hot melt gun with internal melt reservoir and high volume piston pump. The Nordson Mini Squirt melts hot melt adhesive in chip form and applies the hot melt to substrates in bead form through a check valve nozzle tip. The use of a Nordson Mini Squirt is a quality upgrade from hot melt stick guns as it will process a much wider range of low cost hot melts and allow for much faster application of this hot melt.

Please note that the Nordson specification sheet regarding this tool is incorrect as the gun holds approximately three ounces or 80 grams of molten hot melt and not the 7 ounces or 198 grams that Nordson claims. Also, users should be made aware that 15 minutes is an insufficient amount of time for the gun to heat prior to use. Operators should wait a full 20 minutes for this gun to properly heat the hot melt.

Finally, because the gun has very good output capability, hot melt can be used far faster than the gun can melt the adhesive. Consider a premelt tank from Glue Machinery Corporation to supply the Nordson Mini Squirt hot melt handgun with molten adhesive.

Please call or email Pierce Covert of Glue Machinery Corporation to discuss this equipment at 1(888)202-2468 or info@gluemachinery.com
