Glue Machinery Corporation offers a simple system for fast permanent gluing of mortise and tenon joints. Wikipedia explains these joints as follows:
“Simple and strong, the mortise and tenon joint (also called the mortice and tenon) has been used for millennia by woodworkers around the world to join pieces of wood, usually when the pieces are at an angle close to 90°. Although there are many variations on the theme, the basic idea is that the end of one of the members is inserted into a hole cut in the other member. The end of the first member is called the tenon, and it is usually narrowed with respect to the rest of the piece. The hole in the second member is called the mortise. The joint may be glued, pinned, or wedged to lock it in place.” (Wikipedia)
For this process, simply extrude precise volumes of Glue Machinery Corporation’s PUR Reactive Moisture Curing Adhesive into your mortise, insert the tenon, clamp the component for 10-20 seconds, and finally you have a strong immediate bond that allows you to handle the part instantaneously. An impressive 50 to 75 % of the final bond is achieved in this incredibly short time frame.
The beauty of PUR hot melt is that it cures with moisture, in 24 to 48 hours, becoming a far stronger, more flexible product than any water based adhesive. Customers have reported that PUR can offer four times the strength of the best water based woodworking PVA adhesive.
The system pictured here consists of our custom four module Micro Gun with seal tips. The process consists of a couple simple steps: First, line up your mortise under this nozzle set, then actuate the foot switch for a premeasured quantity of PUR to be extruded at very low pressure. The custom applicator is available in one to twenty modules or nozzle tips and can also contain two independant stations operating from one central melter.
The other components of the system are a four way solenoid to cycle the gun, adjustable timer attached to the footswitch, flexible heated hose, and PUR melter or TOF20-Mini five gallon hot melt pail unloader. You can visit our product page at Gluemachinery.com by clicking here.
