Cold Glue Adhesive Application to Paper and other Thin Materials

Label Gluer Lite

Label Gluer Lite by Glue Machinery Corporation

The Label Gluer - Lite is a simple cold glue roll coater that applies water based adhesive to paper and other thin materials.

Simply pour the P200 (or other) water based adhesive into the Label Gluer-Lite glue pan, turn on the constant speed roller, adjust the coat weight on the wheel, and lastly feed the paper into the gluer. The paper is lightly wrapped around the wheel, which is where adhesive is transferred. This wheel specifically applied adhesive glue to the back of the paper and not to the edges or the front.

The adhesive coat weight produced is precise and consistent. One way to ensure optimal application precision is to keep the wheel and adhesive clean. When done with the system the clean up is quite simple, only taking five to ten minutes.

This cold glue roller gluer can apply a range of water based adhesives that permanently bond fabric to paper and several other materials as well.

In the video below, our customer had the need to bond fabric to paper. We successfully demonstrated how the Label Gluer Lite is a great solution for this process.

The Label Gluer- Lite is also used in industrial assembly applications and other high capacity manufacturing needs.

Champ 3 with Slot Die - Hot Melt & Nonwoven Material

Non woven materials can be easily bonded together with hot melt adhesive. Glue Machinery recently demonstrated this successful process to a customer wanting a quick, strong, and effective bond of these kinds of materials.

The Champ 3 with Slot Die is used to apply a thin flat pattern of hot melt adhesive for bonding nonwoven materials to other nonwoven material.

Champ 3 Non Woven Demo on Youtube

For this application, manually tilt the Champ 3 so that the Slot Die nozzle is at a 30 degree angle relative to the substrate, depress the piston pump trigger, and finally move the gun across the substrate to apply a thin pattern.

It is recommended that you use a hot melt with a long open time and medium viscosity to insure that you have ample assembly time. This also ensures that the adhesive does not migrate too deeply or through the porous non-woven material.

Please note that other application methods can be used to bond non woven materials. (Click here for video of another example) Contact Pierce Covert at Glue Machinery Corporation to discuss your particular needs and wide range of options we have to offer.

Dynamelt and Dynamini Filter Removal Instructions

The Dynamelt and Dynamini hot melt systems have an easily accessible hot melt filter located in the top of the hot melter manifold.

Hot melt adhesive can cause severe burns, therefore it is critical that users are very careful when operating on or with this machine. When working with this filter please remember to wear protective gloves, clothing, and glasses to prevent burns and other related dangers. It is also important to turn off both air and power to your hot melt system before servicing the filter in the hose manifold.

We suggest that you read all manuals for the Dynamini and Dynamelt prior to servicing the unit as well.

After performing the preventative and initial steps above, remove the cover plate covering the top of the hose manifold.

With an M5 Allen wrench vent the pressurized adhesive from the hose manifold as shown in the video to be shown below.

Finally, with a 5/8 wrench remove the large bolt and extract the 40 or 100 mesh filter from the hose manifold.

Mortise and Tenon Gluing with PUR Hot Melt

Glue Machinery Corporation offers a simple system for fast permanent gluing of mortise and tenon joints. Wikipedia explains these joints as follows:

“Simple and strong, the mortise and tenon joint (also called the mortice and tenon) has been used for millennia by woodworkers around the world to join pieces of wood, usually when the pieces are at an angle close to 90°. Although there are many variations on the theme, the basic idea is that the end of one of the members is inserted into a hole cut in the other member. The end of the first member is called the tenon, and it is usually narrowed with respect to the rest of the piece. The hole in the second member is called the mortise. The joint may be glued, pinned, or wedged to lock it in place.” (Wikipedia)

For this process, simply extrude precise volumes of Glue Machinery Corporation’s PUR Reactive Moisture Curing Adhesive into your mortise, insert the tenon, clamp the component for 10-20 seconds, and finally you have a strong immediate bond that allows you to handle the part instantaneously. An impressive 50 to 75 % of the final bond is achieved in this incredibly short time frame.

The beauty of PUR hot melt is that it cures with moisture, in 24 to 48 hours, becoming a far stronger, more flexible product than any water based adhesive. Customers have reported that PUR can offer four times the strength of the best water based woodworking PVA adhesive.

Seat Construction and Upholstering with PUR Hot Melt

Most padded and upholstered seats or seat backs used in the transportation industry are assembled with a solvent based contact adhesive. In this process the fiberglass or steel base of a seat or seatback is bonded to foam, which is then bonded to re-enforced fabrics, and finally covered with cloth. Due to the high traffic of these seats, they typically have a seven + year duty cycle. Given these conditions it is often required that lamination between these substrates be permanent.

Most assembly and recovering companies that perform this service are looking for alternatives to flammable spray products such as contact cement. Along with the need for adhesive alternatives, the need to have easier removal of the foam cushioning from the fiberglass or steel bases has been expressed.

Glue Machinery proposes that PUR reactive hot melt is a good alternative. It is easily sprayed onto one side of each component, it bonds quickly, and it cures to a very strong bond. When it is time for this component to be re-upholstered, the materials can be removed with high heat as the PUR bond is softened at temperatures over 300 F.

PUR is also available for smaller jobs or spot welding in 10 ounce cartridges, which are processed by PUR Cartridge Spray guns. For larger volume applications the heated five gallon pail unloader TOF20 Mini with heated swirl hose and handgun is used to dramatically increase output and cut the cost of the PUR hot melt.

Booger Glue, what is it!?

Booger Glue, what is it!?

Booger Glue is a glue that allows you to attach and detach/remove products from each other without causing damage to either substrate.

Booger Glue is used in credit card attachment, tipping of inserts into magazines, gift baskets, direct mail and hundreds of other applications.

In a more formal sense this glue is referred to as a Fugitive/Removable adhesive.

This glue is available in dots on release liner for small applications and in bulk form to be processed in a bulk hot melt handguns, benchmount hot melt systems, or fully automatic systems.

Fugitive adhesive usually stays attached to the first of two substrates it comes in contact with. If one substrate is porous, or easier to attach to, the fugitive glue will usually prefer to stay with that substrate when separation occurs.

Please remember that there are many different types of Fugitive/ Removable adhesives that offer different bond capacities. Be sure to consult with Glue Machinery Corporation to determine the best adhesive for your needs. Another note of interest is to remember that some of these products have a small amount of oil in them and can stain substrates.

Glue Machinery has featured this adhesive application in previous blogs and product listings. Be sure to browse our catalog/archive for more information.

Diagnostic feature on Hot Coat Rollcoaters

Recently, a customer having two identical units was experiencing problems with only one of the units, despite the fact that both were similarly configured and running the same materials. After investigation of his error code (OV-C), we asked him to check his supply voltage. What was discovered was that the voltage source for each unit was from a separate feed. The transformer output that was supplying the roll coater was providing 240v, but was spiking as high as 300V during operation. Relocating the unit to a more stable power source corrected this condition and the customer was able to resume work at full capacity.

Glue Machinery Corporation Hot Coat and Hot Coat Plus industrial hot melt roll coaters have several diagnostic fault codes that may be displayed on the motor speed control (inverter) in case of system error. This feature is one of the many built in benefits and features of Glue Machinery Corporation equipment. Aside from our proven customer service and service department, we also provide superior product documentation with all our products. As always, technical support is just a phone call away. Hot Melt Hose Life

Hot melt hoses should be replaced every couple years depending on usage, temperatures, and adhesive type used.

Our experience is that customers will service their hot melt system and guns regularly but often neglect to do the same with their hot melt hoses. We have found that customers often use old hoses with new systems, which can potentially be damaging to their recent purchase. To protect your investment and ensure optimal production standards, Glue Machinery Corporation recommends replacing your old hoses and having regular service performed to keep them clean and efficient.

The reason old hoses often fail to work or don’t work to optimal standards is that charred hot melt often builds up in hoses, and if not properly serviced these debris will dislodge and thus clog several crucial points in your adhesive system. These debris can cause damage not only to your hose but to your guns, filters, nozzles, and overall system.

Even though the inside of the hose is Teflon lined and designed to withstand high temperatures, the degraded material tends to build up at the ends where the internal diameter of the hose decreases.

Recirculating purge through the hose and back to the tank can help extend the life of the hose but can also lead to debris dislodging from the inside of the hose while the system is on line- causing further damage to the previous mentioned filters, nozzles, and guns.
